About

Lavenson Design is a small architecture firm in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are focused on residential and light commercial projects, delivering highly personalized, comprehensive services. Our work is a balance of creative remodeling and new construction, a combination of editing and invention. We seek results that are refined and well ordered at the deeper architectural levels which transcend style, respond to the essence of a place and stand the test of time.

We work with clients and colleagues who value enduring, beautiful spaces, attention to detail and perceptive communication. We help owners express themselves creatively and secure building approvals in their communities. Our award winning work has been highly regarded by peers and featured in the press since 1985. The company has continued to grow through personal referrals and repeat business. We are grateful for the support of our clients as well as the opportunity to collaborate with fellow designers, contractors and artisans who help us create architecture that is delightful, practical and sustainable.

Kurt Lavenson is the owner and principal in charge of Lavenson Design. He is licensed as an architect in multiple states and works throughout the U.S. He relocated from Philadelphia to San Francisco then worked in the building trades while studying architecture and photography at UC Berkeley in the early 1980′s. After that he was a design-build general contractor for 15 years, performing all aspects of construction from the ground up. He now focuses on architecture, writing and teaching. His design approach focuses on harmony of site, balanced proportion, craftsmanship, appropriate materials and the masterful play of light.
