roof & skylights Addition & Remodel in San Francisco

This project involved a two story addition to the rear of a house in the Presidio Heights area of San Francisco. After a heated and political design review phase the back of the house was extended to allow for an enlarged kitchen and deck downstairs and a master bedroom and bath suite above. The design melded traditional and modern elements to acknowledge the neighborhood context while also meeting current needs.

The massing of the addition was shifted slightly, and the style of doors and windows were varied, to break up the scale of the addition and respond to the neighborhood design context. Craftsman touches, like the divided windows upstairs and the sculpted concrete column at the corner, were intended to give the project a sense of having been constructed in pieces, over time.

The skylights and windows were designed to accentuate the available sunlight and focus it dramatically at the interior of the new spaces. Doors were oversized to emphasize the verticality of the house and to maximize the connection to the back yard.

The interiors were finished in a modern but formal style to remain consistent with the existing Edwardian style house without duplicating it. Cabinetry is maple and cherry. Countertops are granite and stainless steel in the kitchen; colored concrete in the baths. The white oak floors from the main living areas were replaced and extended through the new kitchen.
