The kitchen is comprised of furniture grade cabinetry, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. The central island was designed to resemble a large storage chest. It is made from birdseye maple and cherry. Radiant heating was installed beneath the island countertop to keep it warm and inviting for guests to gather around.

Three rooms at the back of a 1920's home were combined into one large kitchen and entertaining area. Walls between the rooms were replaced with beams mounted flush inside the ceiling framing. The resulting single room was then bordered with crown molding and the oak flooring of the main living areas was extended throughout. This made the new space feel unified and also elevated the kitchen to the same level of formality as the main living rooms.

A barrel vault marks the passage from the kitchen out to the deck. A second sink and counter were located back here, close to the deck, for outdoor convenience. The barrel vault also provides separation for a bathroom and laundry closet that had to remain at the back of the space.

During the second phase of the project, a new deck was designed to link the back yard and the kitchen. The higher level of the deck extends out from the kitchen and has a built in bench, cabinet and limestone countertop. That countertop and built-in cabinet extend down to the lower level where the barbecue is located. From there, a corner stairway spills down to the yard and driveway.

The awning above the french doors references details from the kitchen and the deck. It is a blending of metal and glass with traditional wood trellis work. The neighbors garage was covered with lath and battens to make it a pleasant landscape wall in this yard.
